The Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) family is saddened to learn of the passing of its 1960-1961 President, the Right Honourable John Turner.
An accomplished athlete, lawyer and politician, John Turner began his legal practice in Montreal. While in Montreal, he served as the President of the YBM for the 1960-1961 term.
He was elected to the House of Commons in 1962 and held, over the next three decades, numerous positions in the public service, including as Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Minister of Finance, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition.
He will be remembered by the YBM as a forward-thinking man and a strong advocate for bilingualism in our society. As Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Mr. Turner steered the adoption of the Official Languages Act, whose many principles were later incorporated into the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
More recently, Mr. Turner was a member of the YBM’s Governors Council and shared his vast experience and ideas with the YBM.
On behalf of all of our members, the YBM offers its deepest condolences to Mr. Turner’s family, friends and loved ones.
