Unpacking the new rules of procedure

New guidelines, simplified procedure, issues and court expectations of litigants: Dive into the recent changes to judicial reforms that are altering the way the courts operate with a discussion shared between Judge Frédéric Perodeau, Coordinating Judge of the Superior Court of the Civil and Family Divisions of the District of Montreal, and Judge Marie-Julie Croteau, Associate Coordinating Judge of the Civil Division of theMontreal Courthouse.

Marie-Julie Croteau
Associate Coordinating Judge of the Civil Division of the Montreal Courthouse

Marie-Julie Croteau has been a judge at the Court of Québec since 2017, and is currently Associate Coordinating Judge at the Civil Division of the Montreal Courthouse.

Ms. Croteau holds a bachelor's degree in law from Université de Montréal, and was called to the Bar in 1997. Prior to her appointment to the bench, she practiced law with the firm Donati Maisonneuve from 2007. Her career in private practice enabled her to develop solid expertise in civil and commercial law.

Since becoming a judge, Ms. Croteau has played a key role in the management of civil cases at the Court of Québec, using her experience to improve the efficiency and quality of decisions rendered.

Frédéric Pérodeau
Coordinating Judge of the Superior Court of the Civil and Family Divisions of the District of Montreal
Cour supérieure du Québec

Mr. Justice Frédéric Pérodeau has been a member of the Superior Court of Quebec since December 2020. Since November 2022, he has been Coordinating Judge of the Civil and Family Divisions of the District of Montreal.

Mr. Pérodeau holds a law degree from Université de Montréal, where he was awarded the Faculty Medal. Mr. Pérodeau also holds a master's degree in business law from the same institution, as well as a bachelor's degree in economics from the Université du Québec à Montréal. He is a Certified Corporate Director (CCD) and a Certified Corporate Lawyer (CCL).

Prior to his appointment to the Superior Court, he practiced at McCarthy Tétrault, where he became a partner in 2005, specializing in civil, commercial and professional liability litigation. He then held senior positions at the Autorité des marchés financiers, including Superintendent and General Counsel.

Committed to his community and the legal profession, Mr. Pérodeau has chaired the Board of Directors of the Autorité des marchés financiers. Pérodeau has chaired the Professional Inspection Committee of the Quebec Bar and has been a member of several important committees, including the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association and the Canadian Bar Association.
