Montreal, April 22, 2024 - Last weekend, April 20 and 21, 2024, the Young Bar of Montreal (JBM) successfully held its 42nd edition of the Telephone Legal Clinic. For two consecutive days, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., lawyers and notaries were once again on hand to answer Quebecers' legal questions.
This year's event was a resounding success, with almost 1,200 calls received, demonstrating the crucial importance of this event for citizens' access to justice.
This year's statistics show a remarkable commitment to various areas of the law:
Family: 14.4%
Inheritance: 8.5
General civil law: 10.6
Criminal and Penal: 5% of total
Housing: 11.2%
Extra-contractual liability: 5.5%.
The Clinique juridique téléphonique remains one of the pillars of accessibility to justice in Quebec, and its success would not have been possible without the exceptional commitment of our volunteers. The JBM would like to express its deep gratitude to all the lawyers, notaries and law students who generously donated their time and expertise throughout this busy weekend. Special thanks to Maria-Christina Sorbo-Mayrand, head of the JBM Pro Bono Committee, and her committee volunteers.
The JBM would also like to warmly thank its partners, the CAIJ and the Barreau du Québec, as well as its collaborators, the Jeune Barreau de Québec and the Association du Jeune Barreau de Laval, and the Canadian Association of Paralegals for their ongoing support and contribution to the success of this essential event.
" The continued success of this 42nd edition of the Clinique juridique téléphonique testifies to our legal community's strong commitment to improving access to justice for Quebecers. We are proud to be able to respond to the needs of the Quebec population and thus contribute to a more inclusive and accessible justice system for all. "
Joey Suri, President of JBM
" For this 42nd edition, we benefited from the participation and support of nearly 50 volunteers, including those from the Jeune Barreau de Québec, the Association du Jeune Barreau de Laval and the Canadian Association of Paralegals. We are deeply grateful for their generosity and dedication this past weekend. Their commitment is essential to providing this valuable service to the public and helping citizens find answers to their legal questions."
Élizabeth Ménard-Laberge, JBM General Manager

About JBM
Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers practicing in Montreal for ten years or less, with over 6,000 members. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal advice and information to various segments of the population, and organizes charitable activities. Overall, it aims to improve access to justice and contribute to the collective well-being. As such, in August 2021, the JBM was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism demonstrated by its members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
