The Young Bar of Montreal officially launches the Legal Information Service (LIS) at the Court of Quebec - Room 4.06

26 November 2025 Press release

Montreal, November 26, 2025 - The Young Bar Association of Montreal (JBM) is proud to announce the launch of its new Legal Information Service (SIJ), which will be deployed in room 4.06 of the Court of Quebec in Montreal. Building on the success of the legal information service offered at the Municipal Court of Montreal, the JBM is pleased to extend this initiative to criminal cases in room 4.06, and to be able to count on the commitment of 30 volunteer lawyers from the outset.

The SIJ aims to provide unrepresented litigants with faster, more effective access to initial legal information. JBM members will be invited, on a voluntary basis, to offer a one-time pro bono legal information service to support unrepresented persons in their legal proceedings.

How the program works

Members attending the SIJ in room 4.06 will be asked to :

  • Meet individually with unrepresented litigants who have a first court date in room 4.06 of the Montreal courthouse;
  • Explain the charges they are facing and the potential collateral consequences;
  • Inform them of the various programs available to them, as well as possible next steps in their case;
  • Represent them before the Tribunal at this hearing as a friend of the court.

The JBM is very proud to be able to extend this initiative to the courthouse, and thus have the opportunity to contribute to the accessibility of justice in Montreal.

Thanks

The Young Bar of Montreal warmly thanks the volunteers for their participation and commitment to this new program. The success of SIJ depends entirely on their involvement and generosity. Their contribution is essential to the implementation of this innovative project aimed at improving access to justice for all.

If you have any questions about the program, or would like to report a situation experienced on a SIJ day, members are invited to contact the JBM team directly.

About JBM

Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers practicing in Montreal for ten years or less, with nearly 6,000 members. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal advice and information to various segments of the population, and organizes charitable activities. Overall, it aims to improve access to justice and contribute to the collective well-being. As such, in August 2021, the JBM was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism demonstrated by its members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
