40th edition of the Clinique juridique téléphonique: JBM marks a new milestone in access to justice!

24 April 2023 News

On April 22 and 23, the Young Bar Association of Montreal (JBM) held its 40th telephone legal clinic. This not-to-be-missed event enables the public to benefit from free legal advice provided by volunteer lawyers and notaries. The JBM would like to thank the CAIJ and the Barreau du Québec for their unfailing support in organizing this event. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, nearly 1,500 citizens received free advice on their rights, obligations and legal recourse.

Among the areas of rights most in demand at the clinic are the following:

  • Family (11%)
  • Inheritance (10%)
  • Housing (9%)
  • General civil law (8%)
  • Extra-contractual civil liability (6%)
  • Criminal and penal (5%)

The Clinique juridique téléphonique is one of the JBM's flagship events for accessibility to justice, and would not be possible without the invaluable contribution of its volunteer lawyers, notaries and paralegals. The JBM would like to thank all the volunteers who took time out of their busy weekends to help the public. The JBM would also like to extend special thanks to the Pro Bono Legal Services Committee, headed byMe Gabrielle O'Reilly Patry.

A few words from Alexandra Paquette, President of JBM

"As President of the JBM, I would like to thank all the volunteer members of the JBM who mobilized throughout the weekend to answer citizens' legal questions. It's thanks to you that we're able to fulfill our mission of improving access to justice. It's also thanks to you that many people were able not only to receive free legal advice, but also to feel more reassured following their exchange. "

A few words from ÉlizabethMénard-Laberge, JBM General Manager

"This 40th edition was a great success, thanks entirely to all the volunteers who gave up their time last weekend to answer the many legal questions of people across Quebec. We'd like to thank the Barreau du Québec for supporting this initiative, and the CAIJ for welcoming us to their premises and making their computer equipment available to our volunteers to answer nearly 1,500 calls! As always, this volunteer initiative demonstrates the importance and relevance of continuing to offer these access to justice services. "

We would also like to thank our partners, the Barreau du Québec and the CAIJ, as well as our collaborators theCanadian Association of Paralegals, the Jeune Barreau Québec, the Jeune Barreau Laval, the Centre Justice Proximité du Grand Montréal, Éducaloi and Justice Pro Bono. About JBM

Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers practicing in Montreal for ten years or less, with over 6,000 members. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal advice and information to various segments of the population, and organizes charitable activities. Overall, it aims to improve access to justice and contribute to the collective well-being. As such, in August 2021, the JBM was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism demonstrated by its members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
