The Young Bar of Montreal Launches its 42nd Telephone Legal Clinic
Free legal advice for everyone on April 20th and 21st!

09 April 2024 Press release

Montreal, April 9, 2024 – The Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) is proud to announce the 42nd edition of its Telephone Legal Clinic, which will take place on April 20th and 21st. Over the course of the weekend, lawyers and notaries will volunteer to provide free legal advice by phone to people throughout Quebec. This initiative, alongside other services offered by the YBM, is a concrete and lasting action to improve access to justice. This free service for the Quebec population is implemented by the YBM, in partnership with the Quebec Bar and the Legal Information Access Centre (CAIJ), as well as in collaboration with the Young Bar of Quebec and the Canadian Association of Paralegals.

Housing, Work, Family, Immigration? An Opportunity to Get Free Information About Your Rights and Obligations

The Telephone Legal Clinic is a unique opportunity to receive free advice from a lawyer or notary to better understand your rights and obligations, and to navigate sometimes complex and delicate situations. Whether it's concerns related to family, consumer goods, work, asset management, housing conflicts, or immigration questions, volunteer legal professionals offer their expertise to answer any legal queries. Given the growing demand, the YBM has established this highly anticipated service, available twice a year, to help promote access to justice.

A Simple and Accessible Service

Whether you need information about your rights and obligations, or solutions for preventing or resolving disputes, volunteer lawyers are available to answer the public’s questions with care and professionalism. This well-established event sees high participation each year: last year, nearly 4,000 calls from citizens were received and processed as part of this initiative.

“The Quebec Bar is pleased to collaborate on this 42nd edition of the YBM Telephone Legal Clinic. I would like to highlight the persistence and vigor of an activity that provides an appreciated service to the people of Quebec, and I thank the young members of the profession who generously share enlightening legal information with citizens. As we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Quebec Bar this year, we are proud to once again support this important activity and contribute to humanizing the profession.”

More than ever, at the heart of the legal community, the CAIJ congratulates the work of the entire YBM team, who, through their dedication, will help the public get accurate information about their rights and obligations. We are excited to once again share our expertise and infrastructure with the lawyers and notaries who generously collaborate in this event and offer the public legal advice tailored to their reality.”

About JBM

Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers practising in Montreal for ten years or less - over 6,000 members, representing one-third of the lawyers called to the Montreal Bar. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. Secondly, it provides legal information services to the public on a pro bono basis, and offers a number of services to help Quebecers gain access to justice.
