38th JBM Telephone Legal Clinic:
Highly mobilized volunteers and citizens on hand
Montreal, April 26, 2022 - This weekend saw the 38th telephone legal clinic held by the Young Bar of Montreal, in partnership with the Quebec Bar and the CAIJ. This year's event, which once again focused on dispute prevention and resolution, attracted a large number of legal professionals, lawyers and notaries. They were there to listen to and advise Quebecers on a pro bono basis. Thanks to their dedication, nearly a thousand people were able to find answers to their questions.
Among the most popular topics were the following:
- Family: 15% of total
- General civil law: 13
- Extra-contractual civil law: 11
- Housing: 9% of the total
- Labour law: 7.5% of the total
This event, held twice a year, thanks to the involvement of numerous volunteers, perfectly fulfills its primary function: improving access to justice in Quebec. The Young Bar of Montreal warmly thanks all these volunteers, without whom the event would simply not take place. Special thanks to the Pro Bono Legal Services Committee , led by committee administrator Gabrielle O'Reilly Patry, and to the Telephone Legal Clinic sub-committee , headed by Maria-Christina Sorbo-Mayrand.
A few words from Mathieu Jacques, President of JBM
"The JBM is very proud to have organized the 38th Telephone Legal Clinic. We see that the need for access to justice is great, despite the end of most health measures. This initiative shows that young lawyers are at the heart of concrete actions to promote access to justice. In addition to offering the general public free information on their rights and obligations, it was important to take advantage of the opportunity to raise awareness among Quebec citizens of the existence of alternative dispute resolution methods. "
A few words from ÉlizabethMénard-Laberge, JBM General Manager
"The 38th edition was a real success, and we're delighted to have been able to help the public receive free legal information all weekend long! This clinic was a return to hybrid mode, with receptionists present at the CAIJ offices and volunteer lawyers working remotely. We're very hopeful that for the 39th edition, we'll be able to hold the Clinic in person, as we did before the pandemic. A huge thank you to all our volunteers for your generosity and dedication in making justice more accessible! "
We would also like to thank our partners, the Barreau du Québec and the CAIJ, as well as our collaborators the Fondation du Barreau du Québec, the Canadian Paralegal AssociationCanadian Association of Paralegals,Association des avocats et avocates en droit familial du Québec, Centre de Justice de Proximité du Grand Montréal, Éducaloi, Justice Pro Bono.
