A wealth of free, useful information for entrepreneurs

In this 120-page document, written by volunteer lawyers, the JBM offers a comprehensive guide to the important steps and decisions to be taken by anyone embarking on this adventure. It provides an overview and understanding of the legal aspects essential to setting up a business: legal beginnings, financing, contractual and extra-contractual life, intellectual property protection, legal remedies and means.

A3rd edition published as part of the association's dual mission

This is the3rd edition of the Guide, first published in 2009. Its publication is part of JBM's second mission, which is to facilitate access to justice by providing legal advice and information on a pro bono basis. The Guide is complemented by the Juri-Conseil aux entreprises service, which enables entrepreneurs to discuss their project and the various legal aspects associated with it with a volunteer lawyer during a one-hour legal consultation, free of charge.

The Young Bar Association of Montreal would like to thank all contributors to this 3rd edition of the Guide to Starting a Business. It was produced by the Research and Legislation Committee, under the direction ofMe Gabrielle Robert during the 2021-2022 mandate, and ofMe Carolyne Valois, who acted as project manager.

About JBM

Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers practising in Montreal for ten years or less - over 5,000 members, or one-third of the lawyers called to the Montreal Bar. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal information services to the general public, and offers a range of services to help Quebecers gain access to the justice system. In August 2021, the association was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism shown by [its] members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
