SophieEstienne has an impressive academic background, nourished by bicultural experience in France and Quebec. After being admitted to the Quebec Bar in 2019, she worked as publications manager for Éditions Yvon Blais. Since 2021, she has joined Sylvestre Painchaud et associés as a lawyer, practicing civil and commercial litigation.

For two years now, SophieEstienne has been involved in three committees: the Research and Legislation Committee (Comité Recherche et Législation - CRL), the Pro Bono Legal Services Committee and the Public Affairs Committee (Comité Affaires Publiques - CAP). Her enthusiasm, dedication and constant presence, as well as her creative and overflowing ideas, have quickly made her a key, remarkable and noted volunteer on these three committees.

Here is an overview of his active contribution:

  • Within the LRC, Me Estienne stands out for her consistency and quality of writing. She was already the volunteer who wrote the most articles for the LRC Blog in 2021, and didn't slacken her efforts during the last mandate, when she also acted as co-editor.
  • She innovates by proposing different article templates, and acts as mentor to a student.
  • She wrote the Blog's new welcome text.
  • Ms. Estienne 's commitment to access to justice is manifold. Her constant contributions and presence at meetings make her an essential volunteer for the Pro Bono Committee's projects.
  • In particular, she has distinguished herself as president of the sub-committee for the development of a hearing preparation service at the Human Rights Tribunal.
  • She is a regular participant in the Young Bar of Montreal's telephone legal clinics.
  • Ms. Estienne is also actively involved with CAP. Acting as a bridge between the LRC and CAP, she made a major contribution to the drafting of a brief on Bill 2, the reform of family law with regard to filiation.
  • Always ready to make the JBM's voice heard, she drafted a press release on Bill 14, aimed at protecting trainees in the workplace.

The members of the outgoing Board of Directors and the JBM general management team thank her for her impressive dedication, and wish her every success and pleasure in her new role as Director for the 2022 - 2023 term. We have no doubt that Ms. Estienne will continue to devote her energies to the projects she leads as a member of her committee.

The JBM would also like to acknowledge the involvement and warmly thank the two other volunteers who were finalists for the Volunteer of the Year title:

  • Aurélie Figuet, Langlois Avocats, for her involvement in the Training and Congress & Gala Committees.
  • Me Magdalena Choneva, Coveo, for her involvement in the Information Technology Committee.

They are the next generation of lawyers, both nationally and internationally. They form an influential group, committed to the community, and are destined to become leaders in all spheres of society. When it comes to public affairs, the JBM's mandate is to position itself as a key player in the popularization of current legislation.
