The Young Bar of Montreal applauds government measures to strengthen security at Quebec courthouses

10 June 2024 Press release

Montreal, June 4, 2024 - The Young Bar Association of Montreal (" JBM ") welcomes the Quebec government's recent announcement, made by Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette and Public Security Minister François Bonnardel, to strengthen security at Quebec courthouses.

The measures announced include the installation of metal detectors in nine courthouses: Longueuil, Laval, Joliette, Québec, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Saint-Jérôme, Gatineau, Chicoutimi and Sherbrooke. The Longueuil courthouse will be the first to benefit from this upgrade, with the establishment of mandatory checkpoints for all citizens by the end of the month.

These initiatives represent a significant step forward in guaranteeing the safety of everyone in our courthouses. They also respond to the concerns expressed at the Rencontres Action Jeunesse ("RAJ"), which took place from January 19 to 21, 2024, and are in line with the positions defended by the JBM.

The JBM applauds these efforts to create a safer environment for its members, for all professionals working in courthouses, and for the general public. We will be closely monitoring the deployment of these measures and reiterate our commitment to accessibility to justice, which translates into safe courthouses.

About the JBM

Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together close to 6,000 members who have been practicing law in Montreal for ten years or less. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal advice and information to various segments of the population, and organizes charitable activities. Overall, it aims to improve access to justice and contribute to the collective well-being. As such, in August 2021, the JBM was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism demonstrated by its members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
