Provincial election results: The JBM reiterates its support for any reform of the voting system that introduces elements of proportionality
In the wake of the provincial election held on Monday, October 3, the Young Bar of Montreal (" JBM ") would like to reiterate its position on electoral reform and reiterate its support for any legislative initiative aimed at ensuring better representation of the population within democratic bodies. reiterate its support for any legislative initiative aimed at ensuring better representation of the population within democratic bodies.
This issue has recently resurfaced with the announced projections and results of the provincial election resulting in no less than 90 seats in the National Assembly for the Coalition Avenir Québec, or 72% of the seats, with 41% of the votes cast. The JBM will continue to follow developments in this area closely, and to campaign for representativeness and diversity in the National Assembly.
The JBM has already spoken out on the subject, when Bill 39, An Act to Establish a New Voting System (" PL 39 ") was tabled, with the aim of replacing the first-past-the-post system with a mixed-member proportional system with regional compensation(https://ajbm.qc.ca/nouveau-mode-de-scrutin/). PL 39 never made it past the detailed study stage in parliamentary committee and died on the order paper in December 2021, partly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
About the JBM
Founded in 1898, the JBM brings together lawyers with ten years' practice or less in Montreal, representing over 5,000 members. This makes it one of the largest associations of young lawyers in the world, in terms of numbers for a single city. Its mission is twofold. On the one hand, it defends and promotes the interests of its members. On the other, it provides pro bono legal information services to the general public, and offers a number of services to help Quebecers gain access to justice. In August 2021, the JBM was awarded the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Exceptional Merit, "in recognition of the remarkable dynamism shown by [its] members in the ongoing pursuit of collective well-being".
